Does
the "Devil" card refer to something evil?"
No,
this card has *nothing* at all to do with Satan, devil worship,
or evil. People have gotten the wrong idea about this card.
This card can refer to materialism, temptations, or bondage to bad habits.
The card's name does seem appropriate though, when we consider the idea
of temptation and where it comes from. But the card does *not*
refer to evil, nor is this card (or any other Tarot card) evil. I
wouldn't be working with Tarot at all if that were the case.
In some decks, this card's name has been changed to "Materialism" and I like that change, as it is better descriptive of the card's real meaning.
As you can see from
the card image I chose for this page, the Devil represents the kind of
situation that Pinnochio got himself into with his lies and doing things
for which he knew better! He's in a state of bondage to the puppet
master . . . only allowed to move when told to do so. Temptations
got the better of Pinnochio, and this is a reality that happens in the
real world when we aren't following what we know is the right things to
do . . . but instead, being a follower of others and heading down the wrong
path toward addictions, bad habits, and any other destructive or self-limiting
forms of behavior.
