Deck by D. J. Conway and fantasy artist Lisa Hunt

© 1999 Llewellyn Publications

Author D. J. Conway and artist Lisa Hunt worked together on this project that was born from an idea Conway had when writing her book, Dancing with Dragons.  With the assistance of fantasy artist Lisa Hunt, the Celtic Dragon Tarot was a labor of love that turned a dream into reality.  This unique Tarot deck captures the magic and mythology of the Celtic dragon, yet keeps the framework of the traditional Tarot structure.  Lisa Hunt has certainly done an outstanding job in creating exquisite, thought-provoking, and even amusing images for the enjoyment of both Tarot reader and seeker.  This is a deck that will be admired and appreciated even by those who might normally deny any interest or liking for dragons.

Collectors and dragon lovers are sure to be pleased with this impressive deck.  And as mentioned above . . . even those who don't think they have any interest at all in the subject of dragon legends may find themselves completely enchanted by this Tarot deck . . . I know I sure am!

The art is finely detailed with a color scheme that is somewhat light, yet also includes the right level of coloring and pastels and gray tones to portray a beautiful and realistic deck.  The images in the cards fade out into a gray border.  This is a very nice effect.

In this deck, Swords are represented by Fire and Wands by Air, as opposed to the Wands-Fire and Swords-Air elemental association which I prefer.  However, this does not seem to have an effect on interpreting these cards.  Users of this deck can make either association according to preference.  It's also been noted in some reviews of this deck that ancient Celtic and pre-Celtic systems didn't use the elements of earth, air, fire, and water anyway.  Therefore, the correspondence is going to be flexible.

Some readers feel that this deck is not designed for reading card reversals, however, I have no problem in reading reversals with this deck.  It is close enough to a traditional version of Tarot so that reversals most certainly can be incorporated into the reading to provide more depth and clarity for a given situation.  Reading reversals is a personal choice and works well for those who wish to include this in their reading practice.  Those readers who prefer not to deal with reversals, however, can still do equally accurate and effective readings.  It's just a matter of preference between various Tarot readers.  My preference is to read with reversals as I believe that how the cards turn up for us is of significant value to Tarot interpretation.
