Deck
by Clive Barrett
© 1994 Aquarian; (2002 Reprinted)
The Ancient Egyptian Tarot is available as a deck and book set. I have the original book and deck set by Clive Barrett which is now out-of-print and difficult to find; however, the reprinted publication -- as far as I can determine without actually seeing it for myself -- still containes the same cards and information. It seems that the only main change is in the box design, so you still get the same highly intuitive and beautiful cards as in the earlier edition.
There is a substantial amount of nudity in this deck, and that is because this was simply the way of life in this particular Egyptian era, and is not intended to be taken offensively for those who are more conservative in nature. I have chosen the sample images above to display that do not portray much nudity. Although the images are not intended to be offensive, it is something to keep in mind when reading for conservative clients who may not appreciate the art.
This is a beautiful deck, rich in Egyptian myths and lore and is a favorite among clients and readers who appreciate the study and subject of ancient Egypt. It's been one of the more popular of the Egyptian-style decks today. The images are detailed with sharp colors, and it's a good deck for intuitive readings, as the cards are so richly detailed. As many of the cards do follow traditional Tarot images, I think even a beginner could do well with this deck, especially with the book available to consult for a great deal of useful information. Certainly the cards can be used without the book, but a lot can be missed without it.
From the Preface of the book:
"This book aims to fulfill two distinct but complementary functions. For those new to the Tarot, it gives complete instructions on how to successfully use the cards. Those with more experience of the Tarot will find an explanation of the background, the thoughts and ideas behind the Ancient Egyptian Tarot. The cards of the Ancient Egyptian Tarot have been designed from their very conception to be usable by both the novice and the experienced reader. Each card is fully illustrated, and so not only more satisfying for both the reader and the subject but also readily accessible to the beginner. The titles and sequence of the Major Arcana follow that of the Rider-Waite Tarot, and the practised user will find deeper symbols contained within the illustrations."
