Deck by Reiko Shimizu

© 1994 Japan

The Miracle Tarot deck is a Japanese deck created by Reiko Shimizu.  I am not sure how the artist was inspired to name the deck "Miracle" Tarot.  Perhaps the accompanying book might provide that information, however, it's written in Japanese . . . so unfortunately, those of us who cannot read that language miss out on what the book contains.

The Major Arcana, Court Cards, and the Aces of this deck are absolutely stunning!  The pip cards (2 - 10), however, are done on a plain, white background that show the number of that suit . . . see the 6 of Cups above as an example.  That is my only quibble about this deck, as I can appreciate what a magnificent deck this really could have been had the author used his wonderful talent in creating scenes on the pips cards as well.  However, I do think the art contained in the other cards compensates for this lack.  You'll see that, although this is a Japanese deck, the names of the cards are in English and are indicated on the cards.

When I first saw this deck, I knew I had to have it, if for no other reason than for collecting.  The beautiful artwork found within the cards are appealing to Tarot collectors and anime collectors both.  The artist has drawn images for comic books, and the style of his art for these cards shows fairy or elf-like people.  They seem almost magical.  For readers who like having an extra or "wild" card to use in a layout, its an added bonus to have two blank cards in this deck.

As the pip cards do not contain any thought-provoking images, other than the number of images for that particular suit, I do not recommend this deck for a beginner who is learning Tarot.  Even some of the Major cards, although quite attractive, don't quite tell the story in and of themselves as will a traditional-based Tarot deck.  However, for those who have experience in reading the cards, this deck is a nice -- and beautiful -- change of pace :-)

Number of Cards in Deck: 78 cards (22 Major/56 Minor)

Size of Cards:  4-13/16" x 2-3/16"
This deck can be a bit awkward to handle as it is quite narrow compared to other decks.

Lovers, Chariot, Strength, Hermit, Wheel of Fortune,
