Deck by Bill Greer, illustrator, and Lloyd Morgan

This is a deck which I received as a gift from a friend who has become quite dear to me.  And although you don't have to get a deck as a gift to use it effectively (as some say), it certainly makes your deck very special and cherished when someone gives it to you!  I use the Morgan-Greer deck given to me by my friend for my own personal readings, and I have a second copy of this deck to use in reading for others :-)

Inspired by the images from the Rider-Waite deck and the work of Paul Foster Case, artist Bill Greer (under the direction of Lloyd Morgan), created the beautiful Morgan-Greer Tarot.  Full scenes are shown on every card with a unique color presentation.  The cards have no borders, and I really like this feature for these cards.  Concerning the colors used in the cards, information from the Introduction card (and also on the back cover of the accompanying book, The Book of TAROT, Bill Greer explains about his choice of colors for the deck:

"There are certain colors used as dictated by Case for symbolic reasons.  I sought to incorporate these colors and elaborate, so as to create an immediate emotional reaction to each card even before an image could be looked at in depth.  The work was done in the country away from distractions.  In a practical way, all the years of research and study were allowed to flow into form."
I personally think that Bill Greer was successful in creating the emotional reaction to the cards with his unique way of coloring for the cards.  Some reviewers disagree about the coloring of the cards, but for me . . . it's something that draws me to the beautiful images even more.  The borderless style of the cards is something that also has a personal appeal for me.  Traditional symbolism, artistically re-rendered, makes this a unique, yet a traditional Tarot deck.  Full-frame paintings replace the childlike imagery of the Rider-Waite.

The Morgan-Greer Tarot is a nice, calm deck, and it's ideal for the beginner since books that teach Tarot with the Rider-Waite deck will work equally well with the Morgan-Greer Tarot.  This deck is an excellent choice for those who want to work with a good, basic deck that follows a traditional Tarot theme . . . yet offers art and color that is a lot more interesting.

This deck can be purchased as a Deck & Book set.  The Book of TAROT, written by Susan Gerulskis-Estes is illustrated with black and white images of the Morgan-Greer deck.  It's a very nice book which offers some interesting theories on the origin of Tarot and talks about the Qabala and Tarot.  It provides a brief description of numerology and its relationship to Tarot.  The Major and Minor Arcana are discussed, and both upright and reversed meanings are included for each card in the deck.  I think some really good card descriptions are offered in a basic format . . . perfect for someone at a beginning level of Tarot study.  As this deck is a clone of the Rider-Waite version, one can effectively use the deck without the book if he or she chose to do so.  Anyone who is already familiar with the Rider-Waite deck and meanings can easily use the Morgan-Greer cards.  And anyone who is seeking a reading and prefers the traditional style of Tarot cards will find this deck to be a refreshing (and more colorful) experience for their readings.
