Deck
by Nigel Jackson, internationally acclaimed artist and Tarot scholar
© 2000 Llewellyn
Nigel Jackson is a well-known artist of the esoteric. His style is delicate and precise with soft, muted colors. The scenes on the cards are placed in the Medieval-Renaissance time period.
This deck takes imagery from the Marseilles style, but interprets it with a fresh perspective, staying within the historical context of the deck. Scenes are filled with beautiful costumes, lovely old ships, castles, and countryside scenery. The art is done simply, yet in finely detailed lines that soften the appearance of the images. The colors are a lovely mix of pastels with some brighter hues. Overall, the cards remind me somewhat of Pamela Coleman Smith's work from the Rider-Waite style of cards, but it's infused with Jackson's own personal style as well.
The Nigel Jackson Tarot is a user-friendly deck without intimidation. There is some nudity found within the deck, as is also the case with the traditional Rider-Waite version. It's a deck that can work well for beginners, the advanced, and for collectors.
In this Tarot, Swords represent Fire and Wands represent Air -- a reversal of the more usual associations. A few of the Major Arcana card names have been changed for this deck: The Magician is the Juggler; the High Priestess becomes the Popess; the Hierophant is the Pope; and Strength is renamed as Fortitude.
This set is published in a mini-kit style with the deck in its own box, packaged with a paperback guide to the cards. These are enclosed together in a slipcase box. The minibook includes everything you need to know to use this deck:
