Deck by Poppy Palin

I find this deck to be quite fascinating with woodland sprites, crafty magicians, wise women, dancing fairies, animals, butterflies, and more to leap out from these vibrant cards.  It's a deck that knows how to enchant and delight the senses.

I have categorized this deck under the Wicca category . . . if I'm wrong, please forgive me.  This is a new deck in 2002, (and one I really like!) . . . and determining an appropriate category was a tough decision.  I started to include it in the "Other" section, but decided to put it in the Wicca category of cards.  But as always, you don't have to follow the Wiccan path or any path in particular to use this deck.  If a deck appeals to you or seems to call out to you in some special way, then it will work for you.

The 285-page book, Stories of the Wild Spirit, included with this deck set is unique to other Tarot guidebooks.  This one is written in first-person dialogue to immense you in the tales and energies of the cards.  It's as if the cards are speaking to you from their own perspective.  This is an interesting approach that offers a new way to work with the Tarot and is great for those who learn more easily through visual cues and conversational prose.  I have not read through the book completely yet, as this is a new deck and book for me, but I find this method to be refreshing and insightful to understanding the cards.

Excerpt from the beginning of the book:

"Waking the Wild Spirit Tarot guides us on a journey, as each card speaks to us with its own voice.  The cards can be reflected on individually, opening us to new ways of seeing recurring or difficult questions.  As the card tells us its own story, using first-person dialogue to involve us with its own energies, we allow ourselves to see other aspects and points of view that may be different from our own.  The cards come alive as personalities and living beings, speaking to us in simple yet profound language that may facilitate a soul-shift or realisation.  The cards relate to us as friends and teachers, each with their own moving insights and revelations about the myriad aspects of incarnation and spiritual being." . . .

"This Tarot facilitates greater understanding of the pure and unrefined Self, honouring our true feelings and imperfections.  It can allow us to see where we are, where we have been, and inspires us to see where we would like to go based on experience and a new knowledge of personal desires and wishes.  The clear and uncomplicated dialogue in which the cards engage us mean that we can cut to the heart of the matter, and of ourselves, with the minimum of confusion."

I like the fact that Poppy Palin has given the Minor Arcana of this deck just as much detail and attention as she has the Majors.  All cards have a colored border corresponding to the particular suit along with a small icon image to match . . . for example, the suit of Water (Cups) have a blue/black border and an icon of a water droplet in the upper left and lower right corners of the border.  The suit of Fire (Wands) is bordered in red/black with an icon of a fire spark.  The Air suit (Swords) has a yellow/black border with a feather icon, and the Earth cards (Pentacles) are surrounded with a green/black border and contain an icon of a leaf.  In addition, the Major Arcana cards are bordered in yellow, red, and black, and the icon on these cards is a purple star.

In Stories of the wild Spirit, Poppy Palin presents some interesting information for each suit, discussing the suit qualities and some keywords for each card.  Each individual card is more fully discussed on its own page(s).  Because of the way this card set is presented -- with such an enlightening and informative book to go with the cards -- I would even recommend this set to beginners!  Although it doesn't follow a traditional Tarot system exactly, it is close enough that can be effectively worked with by beginners.  The traditional card names are also noted in the book for reference.  This would also be an excellent set for a beginner to have as a second deck.  It certainly adds depth to the card meanings and offers some new insights and explorations for the Tarot Journey!
