The Circle of Life Tarot is a round deck. In the LWB (little white booklet) that accompanies the cards, it is explained that the circle is a powerful symbol to represent growth and cycles. It represents the concept of time as being infinite. It can also highlight the connection of things with the core meaning at the center of the card. Circles indicate wholeness, divinity, or zero as well. The circular nature of this deck does give one pause to really look at the images a bit more thoroughly than we might view a traditional rectangular shaped card. It can feel a bit disorienting at first glance when the card is not completely upright and you find yourself turning the card like a wheel to make sense of the image and think about what that image represents. However, this may be part of the intent of the deck -- to really make a person think about what they are looking at, to turn our thoughts around and really explore what is there.
Fairy-like beings of the earth, air, fire, and water elements inhabit these cards. The cards measure approximately 4-1/4 inches in diameter and have a golden reversible motif on the backs. The name of each card is featured in six languages. The art is done in water color and it definitely has a fairy/fantasy feel when looking at the images. The round deck can take reversals out of the picture, so it can be appealing to those who prefer not to read with reversed cards in the mix. Reversals would not necessarily have to be out of the picture, because with round decks, you can look at the degrees or angle at which the card rests from being upright or reversed and incorporate that into a reading. You could think of this as a volume control know where there will be a minimum, a maximum, and all the levels inbetween. But overall, this is a deck that most people will work with from the standpoint of upright meanings. The LWB (little white booklet) that comes with the deck does offer some short, but surprising twists on the definitions they provide for each card. I would have really enjoyed seeing more to the LWB than what there is -- or preferably an actual book to go with the cards -- however, I think most people can gain a new perspective or look at a situation from a different angle through working with the "Circle of Life Tarot."
The Deluxe Edition of the cards comes with an aqua colored satin drawstring back that has yellow sunrays on the front. This bag is the only thing that makes the Deluxe edition different from the deck-only version, and actually the lovely bag is one of the things that "sold" me on this deck. I have to say that as lovely as this deck is overall, it's still not among my favorites. The "Circle of Life Tarot" has received a lot of great reviews, and it is deserving of that, but each person is different in what they feel drawn to, and this is not one of the decks I am personally most drawn to -- at least when reading for myself. So although I am not disappointed with this deck, I find that it's just not one that I've completely connected to -- which can change through time as decks can have a way of "growing" on a person.
