The Faery Wicca Tarot found its creation through author Kisma K. Stepanich who was inspired one day while sitting in a stone circle in County Meath, Ireland. The deck is based on her self-created Faery Wicca tradition of witchcraft, although as with any Tarot system, one need not hold the same religious beliefs or practices in order to use a specific deck. My philosophy is that if a deck appeals to you, by all means use it!
The deck's language is Gaelic and is based on a modern Celtic system. The deck blends traditional tarot images with the mystical symbolism of modern Faery magick. There are 83 cards in this deck categorized into five groups:
The four suits represent the four faery cities of the Other World -- Falias, Gorias, Findias, and Muirias. Each helper and Ancient One card is related to a character or object from Irish myth.22 Ancient Ones (Major Arcana) 40 Element Cards (suit cards 1-10) 16 Helper Cards (Court Cards) 1 Power Card 4 Gift Cards
In each corner of the Major Cards (Ancient Ones) is a circle. The circles are red, green, blue, and yellow which correspond to the four elements -- earth, air, fire, and water.
The artwork by Christine Yates is vibrant and rich in detail and symbolism. The cards are printed on high-quality cardstock. The cards are flexible, yet sturdy, and easy to shuffle.
I would recommend the Faery Wicca Tarot to an experienced reader, to those who are interested in Celtic lore, magic, or Faery Wicca . . . and of course, to collectors. I believe that a beginner to the Tarot will be confused. One who practices witchcraft or faery magic might find more meaning to this deck than others. However, as I do not practice witchcraft or follow Wiccan traditions, I cannot say if the cards are accurately representative of those paths. But again, if one is attracted to this deck, it's not necessary to believe or practice any particular following in order to use the cards.
The 167-page booklet that comes with this deck is essential to refer to when using these cards -- at least for those like me who do not practice in Faery Wicca, witchcraft, or any variation of these areas. The booklet can provide some additional thoughts and ideas for each card that go beyond just the traditional Tarot meanings.
For me, this deck is more of a "collector's item," although I will read with it on a rare occasion and as requested for reading purchases.
