The Illuminated Tarot is a beautiful enhancement of Pamela Colman Smith's original Tarot drawings. The idea was not to try to make it "better" . . . but to bring an original vision to life. And Carol Herzer has done an amazing job by truly "illuminating" the Rider-Waite cards which many of us have always held a special place in hearts for. I certainly have favored the Rider-Waite Tarot through the years, because it's the deck from which I learned how to read the Tarot years ago. It's a deck that I will turn back to when I feel it's time to touch base with my own "Tarot roots."
Carol Herzer's illuminating effects are stunning to look at -- and I can tell you that computer scans of her work will not show you the true effects that her special painting techniques do to each card. So although you can look at my sample images and think, "Oh, how lovely!" . . . that's not even the half of what the cards are actually like when you hold them in your hands.
I have only one set of Carol Herzer's specially painted cards, as I was very much on a budget when I finally allowed myself to splurge and get the medium-sized deck she has available. You can get these cards in three different sizes (pocket, medium, or large) and varying degrees of iridescent color. Although I would have loved to have splurged for one of her more expensive and more iridescent decks, I ordered the medium sized cards and was very pleased with them. Yes, any of these cards will be much more expensive than buying a regular deck of Tarot cards . . . but these are specially crafted and the work is surely very time consuming!

You can also choose whether you want Strength to be card #8 and Justice as #11 in your deck, or vice versa. I prefer Strength as card 8, and Justice as card 11, so that was my choice in my deck.
The cards have a protective glossy coat over them, and as I can speak for the medium-sized deck since that is the one that I have, it shuffles easily and the cards are comfortable to handle.

The backs are printed with a dusty purple stardust pattern. They are laminated on both sides with a crystal clear glossy laminate, which still allows the cards to be flexible for shuffling.
If the beautiful painted cards are not enough in themselves, Carol offers you even more with your purchase! All of her decks come with a beautiful handmade pouch for you to hold your cards in. After placing your order, you will receive an email asking about your favorite colors for the pouch and some favorite card choices so that she can select one of your favorite cards that will be put on the pouch cover. I chose the Empress card for my pouch and requested pink and purple for the pouch itself. In addition, I received another Empress card that is signed and dated by Carol Herzer. That is some genuine personal attention that I really loved and felt great about -- and the kind of attention I like to render to my own valued clients and customers.
The Illuminated Tarot takes its place among my favorite decks, as it holds tradition in a place of beauty, magic, and iridescent illumination that captivates the viewer and makes one take that second look on a familiar card.
