A Guide to Mystic Faerie Tarot

The Mystic Faerie Tarot is a whimsical and charming deck of fairies, sprites, nymphs, and mermaids.  This is a deck that could be described as "cute," so the readers who don't like anything "cute" in a Tarot deck will probably not find appeal in this Tarot set.  They may consider it to be too "fluffy" for their Tarot tastes.  However, for the rest of us, this is an enchanting Tarot deck that is useful, fun, and insightful to read with.  There is no nudity or anything scary in the cards, so this deck can even be used to read for children.  It's a nice option for the seekers who request a light-hearted deck that doesn't have anything dark or scary contained within.  I have a few clients who request this kind of deck, and I'm happy to be able to add yet another resource for those seekers who enjoy Tarot readings as long as they won't feel intimidated by the images that appear in the cards.  This is a deck that is very inviting to those individuals who are more sensitive.

A whimsical and charming deck need not be just "fluff," as you can gain valuable insight from any deck that you feel attuned to.  This is a deck that you can have fun with.  It puts the fun back in Tarot, and I think that is so important in consideration of how many people wait until life becomes chaotic and serious before they venture into a Tarot reading.  You can still get serious and useful answers with the Mystic Faerie Tarot while also having fun with the cards.  This is a deck that encourages a person not to wait until life feels like a hardship before doing a reading.  But for those who do wait until life is overly stressed, the enchantment of this deck can offer a calm feeling as it offers up the wisdom of its messages.  Each reader and seeker can experience a reading with a particular deck of Tarot cards in different ways, but this is how I experience the Mystic Faerie Tarot deck.  It's a charming deck yes . . . but also equally effective as other decks that I use.

The deck comes beautifully packaged in a box that opens from the front.  The Temperance card (shown above) is featured as the display image for the front of the box.  The Wheel of Fortune card (also shown above) is featured on the front of the companion book.  In this kit, you also receive a gold organza bag for the cards as well as a 284-page guidebook for the cards.  The guidebook was written by Barbara Moore, and I really love her style and methods in writing!  Each Tarot suit, from Ace to Ten, has a special story in addition to the card's message for interpretation.  The story contains the themes and associations for each Tarot suit.  This always makes for a very interesting and engaging Tarot book when stories are presented through the cards.  The story for the Wands is called "The Grand Adventure" and tells a story of two young fae who go off to seek their fortune.  It tells of the triumphs, risks, responsibility, and danger when undertaking a project.  The story of the Cups suit is "The Magic Celandine," which is a sad and bittersweet tale of love that is found in the most unlikely places, but love that also finds a happy ending.  The tale of the suit of Swords is called "The Blue Rose" which illustrates the resourcefulness of two young fae as they face a distressing situation and call upon the Faery Queen in a valiant effort to save the land and people from desolation.  The Pentacles suit is "A Faerie's Fortune" which is tale of an uplifting experience of an industrious fae whose hard work and planning ahead for the long winter months took an unexpected turn for the worse, but by taking advantage of a lucky and generous opportunity, she worked with others for the benefit of all involved.

The 78 cards are classified into three divisions:  The 22 Major Arcana,  40 Minor Arcana (or pip cards -- Ace through Ten), and the 16 Court Cards.  Court cards are a part of the Tarot's Minor Arcana, too, but this books further separates the Minor Arcana card classifications.  The information for the court cards in this book is more scant than the other cards.  They are not a part of the minor arcana stories, and the information is quite brief for each court card.  I really would have liked to have seen more with the court cards, as I think this is an excellent deck with a well-written book to go with it, and the author is certainly knowledgeable in the Tarot.  It could have been very close to perfect in my view if more detail had been provided for the court cards as has been done with the rest of the cards in the deck.  It felt as if the author was at a loss for words when she got to the court cards, and the courts of the Tarot can be some of the trickiest and most misunderstood cards of the Tarot.  This is why I think it's important to give them as much attention as possible in a book -- at least as much attention as the other cards are getting.  And so the court cards are only briefly described in the guidebook which is a bit of a disappointment.  There was more room on each page to include considerably more information if the author had chosen to do so.  But if you are already a reader, you can easily incorporate your own interpretations of the court cards after reading the brief entry in the companion guide for these cards.

The companion book does not address the use of reversals.  But reversals are used in the sample readings at the end of the book, and the backs of the cards are reversible, featuring what appears to be a leafy, mystical face.  So it seems that reversals are intended to be used with this deck, although no specific reversed interpretations have been offered in the companion book.  These are my only quibbles with the book.  Otherwise, the author Barbara Moore, has done an excellent job in conveying the feeling and meaning of the cards.

Each of the Minor Arcana suits have an artistic theme and setting.  For example, the Swords are featured with fairies among a pink rose bush.  For the suit of Pentacles, the fairies are in a berry bush.  The Wands suit features fairies sitting on mushrooms, and the watery suit of Cups presents fairies sitting on lily pads in the water.

I find this deck to be especially useful for questions regarding self-discovery, understanding and working through fears, as well as for typical divination questions.  It's a nice deck to attune to on a spiritual level, although others might not see it that way.  The "cute" or "fluffy" element may get in the way for some readers, but each person is different with tastes that may differ from the next person.  And that is what makes us all unique.

If you enjoy the world of faeries, I think you will find this enchanting deck to be a very nice one to work with, as you can gain some fresh perspectives and newfound wisdom.
