Revelations Tarot

This deck is suitable for any question you wish to ask of the Tarot.

The Revelations Tarot features reversible images that merge and flow from upright to reversed for each card.  This is an interesting effect for a deck of Tarot cards, which I really like.  The swirling art reminds me of a stained glass window effect on some of the cards.  The flow between upright and reversed is very smooth.  The well-written 199-page book which accompanies this deck offers both upright and reversed card interpretations.

Author Zach Wong discovered this idea while in the midst of a journey of self-discovery.  At the start of the new millennium, he felt a need to better understand himself, and decided to turn to Tarot to help him in the process of self-discovery.  But no matter how appealing the many available decks on the market were at that time, he was not able to personally connect with them.  And so he ventured into a journey of his own to create a Tarot deck that he could connect with.  He began this ardent journey in early 2000, and completed his project, the "Revelations Tarot," in 2005.

A vibrant and colorful array of art will be found in this deck.  The art is reminiscent of art nouveau styles as well as a stained-glass window effect.  The corresponding interpretations in the accompanying book are very well written and do not stray much from traditional card meanings.  The deck itself is certainly not a Rider-Waite-Smith clone, but the book meanings could work quite well for a traditional set of Tarot cards.

As I looked through the cards, I could imagine what the story might be telling just from the scene of the cards.  I could visualize what the characters might be saying in their upright and reversed positions.  Each card is filled with symbols that add depth to each card and to the deck as a whole.  As you look at a card, you might wonder whether to focus only on the top half of the card, or on the card as a whole, whether a card should appear upright or reversed.  If we consider how the upright portion of the card will show us what is actively operating in our lives at the time of the reading, we can also realize that each of us have a shadow side, too, that can be portrayed in the reversed portion of the card.  This reversed polarity is also an active part of us -- similar to the Wheel of Fortune card in a traditional Tarot deck that points to the ups and downs of life.  If we receive a difficult card reversal, we should look at how to turn that energy around in our lives through new choices or actions.  Things can and do change in life -- and that's a comforting thought in times of sorrow or distress.  So for me, this reversed image concept on the cards is one that I really enjoy working with.

Interestingly, when I first got this deck in the same year it came out, I wasn't sure I would like it.  It kind of sat for a long time -- in fact, it sat until just recently (November 2009) when I started really going through my decks and further exploring the ones I hadn't yet posted to my website.  I've found a lot of gems in the process, and this is one of them!

The Major Arcana portray characters with a fractured mask and stained glass image effects.  The author explains that the masks are a "representation of a human relation, similar to that of the mythical gods who stand in human form amongst us to ease our comprehension of the messages they deliver."  The images represent a major lesson to be learned or something to be studies. The Minor Arcana are considered in this deck to be lesser versions of the lessons offered from the Major Arcana.  This holds to the concepts of the major and minor "secrets" or "mysteries" of the Tarot -- all of which are actually lessons we are meant to explore and learn in our daily lives . . . and for the bigger picture as well.

The suit of Cups feature merpeople, indicative of emotion and freedom of movement.  The Wands suit features magicians, warriors, and sages who create or fight with the element of fire.  The Pentacles feature metallic humanoids that are consistent with their earthly, material suit.  The suit of Swords features logical warriors.

The bulk of the 199-page companion book consists mainly of explanation and interpretation for each of the 78 cards, which I found to be really refreshing as space is not taken up with the things we generally already know about -- such as care of the cards, personal reading rituals, etc.  At the end of the book, Zach Wong provides four basic spreads:  Past, Present, Future; Four Elements; 7 Days Spread; and the Horoscope Spread.

The book and card set comes packaged in a box and includes a black organdy back for card storage.  A paper box is also included if one prefers to use a box instead of a bag for card storage.  I am not especially fond of most of the cheap organdy bags that come with a lot of decks these days, and I generally use a Tarot bag -- either one I've purchased or one I've made myself.  The card backs of this deck are reversible with a swirling design in shades of purple.  The cards have a smooth finish, fit comfortably in the hands, and measuring at 2-3/4" x 4-3/4," they shuffle with ease.
