This deck's theme is based on the King Arthur myths and legends, so those who find an interest in this theme may particularly enjoy the "Avalon Tarot." There are some interesting images that I found to be quite intriguing, but overall, this is one of those decks I saw pictures of and felt I just "had to have it" . . . but then wasn't all that excited about it when I got it. I think with the masculine theme of this deck based on Arthurian legends, men may most enjoy this deck. Fans of science fiction might also have a special interest for this deck. But anyone, men or women, who have a fascination for these legends may especially enjoy using the Avalon Tarot. I'm certainly not opposed to using this deck, but it's not one I will reach for to do a reading for myself. However, I do use it to read for others who request it for their readings. Just because it doesn't make the list among my personal favorites doesn't mean it won't be a favorite for someone else.
The Arthurian theme is set in a fantasy medieval world with artwork and coloring that actually might remind you of a comic book. With that said, I don't mean that the art is crude; it's actually very well done and quite detailed.
In most Tarot decks, the minor arcana will show the number of symbols to match the card number -- for example 6 pentacles displayed on the Six of Pentacles card. This deck does not hold true to that tradition, but in the upper left hand corner of the pip cards is a symbol to represent the suit, along with the Arabic number in the right hand corner. The Major Arcana feature the roman numeral of the card in the upper left corner and the name of the card in the right hand corner. The LWB (little white book) that accompanies the cards is a 14-page fold out booklet with brief meanings for the cards.
Those who might take offense to nudity or violence will not likely warm up to this deck, as there are scenes of this nature in the cards. There are not a lot of cards that contain nudity in the deck, but the overall feel of the cards take on a war-like theme in my opinion -- or perhaps a "love and war" theme might better describe the feel that I get from the cards. So again, I think the masculine nature of this deck may appeal most to male seekers and readers. Many of the images are quite powerful representations of a particular card and scene. I did particularly like the rendition of some of the "difficult" cards of the Tarot, such as the Tower and the Moon cards, shown above in the sample images. When I look at this version of the Tower card, I definitely get the feel of bleakness and desolation, or something that was thought to be grand turns out to be anything but grand.
Some of the cards can be easily related to traditional Tarot, while others are quite different. Perhaps I could have enjoyed this deck more if there had been a companion book to go with it -- more than just the tiny bit of information to be gathered from the fold-out leaflet comes with this set of cards. For those who have some familiarity with the Arthurian tales, however, this is probably sufficient knowledge to fully enjoy these cards.
The leaflet for these cards is written in English. The names on the cards are presented in English, Italian, French, Spanish, German, and Dutch. The cards have a matte finish, are printed on quality cardstock, and measure approximately 4-5/8" x 2-1/2".
Although I couldn't reasonably suggest this deck to a new student of the Tarot, the Avalon Tarot will have its appeal to the masculine audience as well as to those who have an interest in the legends of King Arthur and Avalon. Those who are interested in themes of science fiction and fantasy might also find this deck to be of interest.
