Tarot of Mermaids pays homage to the mythical mermaid. It's a fully illustrated deck with lovely art featuring mermaids in various scenes that are similar to traditional Tarot. I was surprised to find this deck relate so well to a traditional deck in terms of the types of scenes presented on the cards. Some of the scenes are underwater and others are above water, or at the shore near water. The artist coloring for the day or lighted scenes are done in predominantly red hues, while blue and violet tones are uses for evening and night scenes.
As one might expect, almost every card contains nudity. The mermaids are featured naturally -- not wearing a shell bra or a swimsuit top the way mermaids are shown with young viewers in mind. That made it a little difficult for me to choose cards for the sample images above, as I try to keep everything clean on the site so that even if a youngster did happen upon any of my site pages, there would be nothing too mature for them to see. In this case, there aren't a lot of options to choose a card without any nudity at all.
I enjoy the myths of mermaids, and so naturally when I found this deck, I wanted it and decided to buy it. Admittedly, when I first looked through the deck, I just didn't think it could work for me. I guess I had hoped to see more color or for all the images to stand out in a more vivid way. But as I continued to explore the deck and go back to it again (as I will never let my first impression be the last one for any deck unless that is just how it's going to be no matter how many times I revisit a deck), I grew to like it -- perhaps because the images are quite lovely, even if the color tones almost put me off initially. And as I saw how it relates so well to traditional Tarot, I realized that it's a deck that someone who has little experience could use -- especially those who enjoy the enchanted world of Mermaids and myths as I do.
This is a deck that you can use for any type of question in a Tarot reading. Even though I now feel an affinity with this deck that I couldn't seem to initially establish, I don't consider this deck to be among my favorites, but it's still a deck that I like and will use once in a while. I certainly established a better "friendship" with this deck as I was able to connect with it. Sometimes a person has to do that -- just keep revisiting a deck before you decide for sure if it will or won't work for you. Because this deck can and does work for me now that I gave it the fair chance that it deserved -- and the fair chance that any deck deserves even when we end up with one we think we aren't going to like. Decks have a way of growing on us, even when we least expect it.
Although the court card titles are Chalices, Swords, Wands, and Pentacles, the card images show a different association. You won't see cups or chalices in the suit of Chalices as you might expect. Instead, you will find shells. The suit of Swords features 3-pronged spears, Wands display oars, and the suit of Pentacles features pearls.
The backs of the cards feature the Magician of this deck mirrored and inverted in shades of blue with seashell borders.
