The Psychic Tarot Oracle
Deck
© 2007 John Holland
Author John Holland knew he had a psychic gift even before ever owning his first deck of Tarot cards. When he became aware of his special gift, he began reading everything he could about his abilities. During that time, he purchased his first Tarot deck. He indicates that the cards reached out to his intuitive mind in ways that went beyond the meaning of each card. The cards served as a channel for further psychic information. John Holland designed his Psychic Tarot Oracle to encourage the innate psychic abilities within others. His goal was to create a deck that can be used and accessed by anyone -- from the novice to the individual who is already in tune with his or her psychic capability. The meanings of colors, shapes, and words are all important elements in this beautiful deck . . . and one's imagination and an open mind can allow much more to be unlocked if one has the desire to do so.
The Psychic Tarot Oracle is a non-traditional Tarot deck. Some argue that it should not be classified as Tarot at all, but it has been named as a Tarot deck by the author, and I see many traditional associations of the Tarot through these cards. In fact, the only thing that feels significantly different to me with this deck is that there are no court cards, no suit Tens, and 7 chakra cards have been added into the mix. The names of the cards are different than traditional Tarot, but still have titles that can easily be related to. There are still four suits in this deck with 9 cards each (leaving out the 10 if comparing it to traditional Tarot suits).
In this oracle, the suits are:
The Emotions suit represents relationships of the heart, feelings, desires, emotions, love, and joy -- much like the suit of Cups in traditional Tarot.
The Mental suit represents communication, thoughts, ideas, intellect, and the workings of the mind. It also portrays obstacles, difficulties, decisions, and power -- like the suit of Swords.
And finally, the Spirit suit represents the spark of life, inspiration, spiritual force and principles, aspirations, willpower, and passion -- which is comparable to the suit of Wands in traditional Tarot systems.
Seven cards are designated as the Chakra Cards, and they include the following:
There are 22 Major Arcana
cards, all with non-traditional titles . . . but still titles that are
applicable to tarot tradition. The names of these cards and their
traditional correspondences are as follows:

The author further goes on to say that the "purpose of the Psychic Tarot Oracle Deck is to create positive experiences, not to reflect or heighten negative meanings; rather, its aim is to give you guidance so you can gain a look ahead and make the proper changes that will lead to a beneficial outcome for your highest good." I don't feel that the use of reversals emphasizes a negative meaning, because some cards that are reversed are actually more favorable than if they do appear upright. Yet a reversed card can signify areas of challenge, blocks, or delays . . . so if they do come up in a reading, I think they are important to assess in terms of why things might be blocked or delayed . . . or to see how we might need to change course a bit in order to be on the favorable path that an upright card might indicate. Perhaps John Holland wanted to remove the complexities here by not advocating the use of reversed cards, but I still feel they are important. There are a few decks I am totally fine with using only upright cards only, but that is just a few, and usually it's because they are either not Tarot decks, or the structure is just so completely different from traditional Tarot that it feels right to let those cards speak from an upright vantage point. The Psychic Tarot Oracle, to me, feels a lot like traditional Tarot in many aspects -- just with some new names for the Major cards and new titles for the suit cards.
The cards are packaged in a sturdy box with a 170-page guidebook. The cards are laminated with a shiny, glossy coating and measure 5" x 3-1/2." The cards also have an attractive gilt edging -- a feature that I've seen becoming more popular on decks lately.
I wouldn't recommend this deck to a beginner to Tarot as the structure is quite different from that of traditional Tarot systems, however, it can be a truly insightful deck for those who are experienced with the Tarot. The images are gorgeous and such a pleasure to work with. The Psychic Tarot Oracle can be used for divination purposes, meditation, or other spiritual work, including the enhancement of one's intuitive or psychic abilities. Each person can experience this deck, or any other deck for that matter, in a different way. The back of the box indicates that you'll be able to incorporate John Holland's techniques when you do a tarot reading for yourself or others. With that statement, I think it's important to realize that this deck does not offer a guarantee that you will be able to see things in the same way that John Holland, a well known psychic medium, sees things. Some people will read something like this and get the impression that the cards will make them psychic. It is up to each individual to work with his or her gifts to bring them out and enhance them . . . or leave them alone. And each person's abilities will different from another person. Intuitive and psychic abilities come naturally, and trying to force them usually is not effective.
Here is what is written on the back of the card box:
"The 65 beautifully illustrated cards in this deck will create a powerful bridge between your psychic abilities and the ancient knowledge and meanings of the tarot; and will help you develop intuitive insights about all areas of your life, including love and relationships, business matters, and even career changes. This fascination deck will work for you whether you're a novice or are already in tune with your psychic abilities. In the accompanying guidebook, psychic medium John Holland imparts techniques that he's practiced himself and taught in his workshops, relating to colors, symbology, shapes, words, card spreads, divination, numerology, energy centers, imagination, and more. By using the cards, you'll be able to incorporate John's techniques when you do a tarot reading for yourself or others."
